Early Words resources are designed to give parents understanding and practical advice to help their children on the road to literacy. Parents will receive the resources progressively, from pregnancy until their children start school at 5 years of age. Western Sydney families will receive these resources free.
Professionals working with local families will also be able to access the resources at no cost.
Some resources, like the tip sheets, may be downloaded from this website and printed out for personal use. If you are from outside western Sydney, Australia, and you would like to make use of these resources more widely in your community, please contact us.
Resources will be available in a number of languages spoken in western Sydney, in addition to English. These will include Aboriginal English, Arabic, Chinese, Dari, Hindi, Korean, Tamil, Turkish, Urdu and Vietnamese.
Brochure
Two brochures are available. Both explain briefly what the Early Words project is about, and where to obtain tip sheets and other materials. One is designed for use within the project area, and the other for a wider audience.
DVDs
As a complement to the tip sheets (below) our delightful DVDs cover many of the same points, but illustrated by photos of children and their families in western Sydney. Each DVD contains several video slideshows. Parents and carers may choose to play the videos that correspond with the ages of their children.
- Pregnancy–3 years (available now, in English only — multi-language version to follow) — distributed with first tip sheet;
- 3–5 years (available soon).
The DVDs will explain key stages of early literacy development, and suggest practical ways in which parents and carers can help their children’s progress. Suitable for both parents and professionals.
Tip sheets and magnets
Early Words tip sheets give parents information, practical ideas and helpful contacts at each stage of their children’s development. They complement the DVDs. Most tip sheets will be accompanied by fridge magnets displaying brief reminders of important points.
Tip sheets will generally come with your DVDs at two stages:
- during pregnancy, at an antenatal appointment,
- via early childhood centres at three years.
In some cases you may receive them:
- at an antenatal clinic appointment (along with the first DVD),
- at babies’ birth in hospital,
- at the 2 months immunisation visit,
- at the 6 months immunisation visit,
- at the 12 months immunisation visit,
- at the 18 months immunisation visit,
- at 3 years, at early childhood centres,
- at the 4 years immunisation visit.
Tip sheet downloads
All Early Words tip sheets can be downloaded from here in PDF format. Just choose your language and click on the links to view them in your browser. From there you can save them to your computer. You can also right click on the links (control-click on Mac) and choose to download the PDFs directly to your hard drive.
You can choose either colour or black and white versions of the tip sheets. You will save ink on your printer if you choose black and white.

Fridge magnet download

Includes the 6-month tip sheet and magnet, as well as a sturdy board book containing pictures of Australian babies with their families. This book, published by Magbala books Aboriginal Corporation features photos of a variety of cultures and is wordless, allowing families to tell their own stories.
